They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town. But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind. She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon. Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey. One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic. Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own. As Luna's thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge--with dangerous consequences. Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch. A nice publication with all 10 illustrations by Charles Robinson from the first edition.
The Secret Garden was first published in book form in 1911 following the publication in 1910 of a serial version in a U.S. magazine. Set in England, it is one of Burnett's most popular novels and is considered a classic of English children's literature. The book's main character, Mary Lennox, is living in India with her uncaring parents when they are both killed in a cholera epidemic. She is sent to live with an uncle at his house in England. There she meets and helps her uncle's sickly son, Colin, recover his health. Several stage and film adaptations have been made. This edition includes the original illustrations by Charles Robinson that appeared in the British first edition. The Secret Garden is often considered one of the best children's books of the twentieth century.
Their Eyes Were Watching God, a luminous and haunting novel about Janie Crawford, a Southern black woman in the 1930s whose journey from a free-spirited girl to a woman of independence and substance, continues to inspire the next generation of students.

Building on the last edition, (dedicated to exploring alternatives to coal- and oil-based energy conversion methods and published more than ten years ago), Thermodynamics and Heat Power, Eighth Edition updates the status of existing direct energy conversion methods as described in the previous work. Offering a systems approach to the analysis of energy conversion methods, this text focuses on the fundamentals involved in thermodynamics, and further explores concepts in the areas of ideal gas flow, engine analysis, air conditioning, and heat transfer. It examines energy, heat, and work in relation to thermodynamics, and also explores the properties of temperature and pressures. The book emphasizes practical mechanical systems, and incorporates problems at the end of the chapters to advance the application of the material.
What's New in the Eighth Edition:
This text presents an understanding of basic concepts on the subject of thermodynamics and is a definitive resource for undergraduate students in engineering programs, most specifically, students studying engineering technology.
This book identifies the key rhetorical moves in academic writing. It shows students how to frame their arguments as a response to what others have said and provides templates to help them start making the moves. Finally, two NEW readings provide current examples of the rhetorical moves in action.
The first edition of A Tutor's Guide helped tutors across the country connect composition theory to the everyday events in their tutoring sessions. This second edition moves further into the practical realities of today's writing centers, taking a closer look at the most important issues facing writing tutors and the students who confer with them.
Like its predecessor, A Tutor's Guide, second edition, provides access to the professional conversation that surrounds writing-center practices, offering a concrete sense of what tutoring sessions are really like, who uses them, and how to maximize their effectiveness. Now, new chapters take the interactions outlined in the first edition into conferences with:
The second edition also includes a new chapter that helps tutors understand what happens when a session goes awry and gives them fresh tools for reflection that will strengthen their ability to respond to unusual situations in the future.
With a keen awareness of both the nuts and bolts and the important theoretical and pedagogical underpinnings of good tutoring, A Tutor's Guide is an invaluable tool for every writing center.
Even as she was pursuing her psychiatric training, Jamison found herself succumbing to the exhilarating highs and paralyzing lows that afflicted many of her patients. Though the disorder brought her seemingly boundless energy and mercurial creativity, it also propelled her into spending sprees, episodes of violence, and an attempt at suicide.
Powerfully candid, exceptionally wise, An Unquiet Mind is one of those rare books that has the power to transform lives -- and even save them.

A GOOD MORNING AMERICA Book Club Pick!"Bennett's tone and style recalls James Baldwin and Jacqueline Woodson, but it's especially reminiscent of Toni Morrison's 1970 debut novel, The Bluest Eye." --Kiley Reid, Wall Street Journal
"A story of absolute, universal timelessness ...For any era, it's an accomplished, affecting novel. For this moment, it's piercing, subtly wending its way toward questions about who we are and who we want to be...." - Entertainment Weekly
From The New York Times-bestselling author of The Mothers, a stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect? Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins. As with her New York Times-bestselling debut The Mothers, Brit Bennett offers an engrossing page-turner about family and relationships that is immersive and provocative, compassionate and wise.A thoughtful, portable clinical companion, Varcarolis' Manual of Psychiatric Nursing Care Planning: An Interprofessional Approach, 6th Edition, provides you with the latest diagnostic information available, including the DSM-5 and patient problems, for accurate assessment and diagnosis of patients. Renowned primatologist Robert Sapolsky offers a completely revised and updated edition of his most popular work, with over 225,000 copies in print
Now in a third edition, Robert M. Sapolsky's acclaimed and successful Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers features new chapters on how stress affects sleep and addiction, as well as new insights into anxiety and personality disorder and the impact of spirituality on managing stress. As Sapolsky explains, most of us do not lie awake at night worrying about whether we have leprosy or malaria. Instead, the diseases we fear-and the ones that plague us now-are illnesses brought on by the slow accumulation of damage, such as heart disease and cancer. When we worry or experience stress, our body turns on the same physiological responses that an animal's does, but we do not resolve conflict in the same way-through fighting or fleeing. Over time, this activation of a stress response makes us literally sick. Combining cutting-edge research with a healthy dose of good humor and practical advice, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers explains how prolonged stress causes or intensifies a range of physical and mental afflictions, including depression, ulcers, colitis, heart disease, and more. It also provides essential guidance to controlling our stress responses. This new edition promises to be the most comprehensive and engaging one yet.Wilkin's Clinical Assessment in Respiratory Care, 8th Edition, is the world-leading respiratory care text devoted exclusively to patient assessment.
